Panama’s Geisha Coffee: A Delicious and Coveted Treasure
In recent years, Panama has distinguished itself worldwide due to its much coveted Geisha variety coffee.
Panama’s Geisha coffee continues to break world records, achieving the price of US$10,000 per kilogram during the 2023 Best of Panama electronic auction. Moreover, it is expected that the quality of last year's winning coffee will allow Panama to aspire to a new record price in the auction slated for August 7, according to Hunter Tedman, president of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (known by the acronym of SCAP).
Cultivation of Geisha Coffee on Baru Volcano
Data obtained from the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) of Panama shows that Panama's coffee planting is about 21,000 hectares, of which about 12,400 hectares are dedicated to the Arabica variety and the remainder to the Robusta variety. On the other hand, of Geisha variety, 190,000 to 210,000 quintals are produced per year on small farms on the slopes of the Baru volcano, which is located 3,474 meters above sea level, being the highest point of the Panamanian territory.
